November is National Senior Pet Month

This month is National Senior Pet month and it is dedicated to bringing about awareness to finding homes for senior pets as well as acknowledging that seniors make wonderful pets. Just because these pets are a little older does not diminish their value. In my experience as a volunteer, I’ve found that older pets are often overlooked because they are not young or have some medical issues.

Not only are senior pets overlooked, they are often disposed of or dumped at shelters by owners not willing to deal with health issues the older pet may encounter or even something as minor as vacation arrangements.

Yes, you heard that right! I have literally encountered situations where the owner surrendered or gave up their older pet so they could take a 3 week cruise to the Caribbean! It’s unfathomable to me, however this is the imperfect life we deal with day in and day out.

As a new foster mom to an adult cat Stubby, I can say seniors make great pets. He’s 6 1/2 years old so not quite a senior but seeing how older cats are often overlooked, I can tell you, Don’t miss out!

Adult and senior pets make great pets and would make for a fantastic addition to the family. Still need more reasons to adopt a senior pet? Don’t take my word for it. Check out this short video by Jackson Galaxy to learn how adopting a senior pet in your life can benefit both you and your pet.

Advantages of adopting an older pet from Jackson Galaxy!

    1. They demand less and give more.
    2. They are less willfully destructive.
    3. Their needs can be simpler and great if you work a lot.
    4. Personalities of older cats are already established.
    5. Older animals are harder for shelters to adopt out.
    6. Expand your circle of compassion!

I hope after reading this post it has opened your mind to consider adopting a senior pet. And if you are not ready to adopt now, at least you have more knowledge about National Senior Pet month and how senior pets can enhance your life down the road.
