Cats Rule! I love animals, especially kitties! Yes I’m the crazy cat lady. Just kidding. I promise you I’m quite the level-headed practical Gen X kid who has a love of the feline variety but an otherwise normal stable domestic life. I love cats and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. There! I’ve confessed my two obsessions. Don’t judge. With that said, as you know this blog is about finding joy and comfort post pet loss, so let’s lighten up the mood and explore a topic more upbeat. I wanted to write a more light-hearted post for fun. So here are my top 10 reasons why Cats Rule (and Dogs drool!)
1. Cats are low maintenance
Cats don’t require a lot of attention, training and playtime. Even toys are easy. Sure you can go out and buy lots of squishy toys but all you really need is a cat space where they are able to climb and use a scratch pad and empty cardboard boxes. If you have a laser pointer –Score. You can sit on the couch and use that laser pointer to wear them out with playtime all the while you have your feet up. Also, if you have to get away for an overnight trip or the weekend, you can do that with a cat. As long as they have more than enough food and water left out for them, they are golden.
2. Cats use a litter box!
You don’t have to take them outside multiple times per day in bare frigid temperatures! Plus, nowadays there are plenty of sleek designed littler boxes that look just like furniture and are discreet. And let’s not forget that there is no touching or handling of the poo when you have a scooper. All poo is handled by a scooper not a plastic bag turned inside out and then….yuk! And you don’t have to worry about monster sized poo from a Great Dane when you have a cat.
3. No slobbery kisses
Sure some people like slobbery kisses, however I’m just not one of them. With cats, there’s no severe drooling on you when they kiss you, unlike some dogs. Cats do have a rougher texture tough however that’s easy to get used to and actually tickles in some instances.
4. Less mess and noise
Sure a cat meows and can get into trouble but I’ve never heard of a cat destroying a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes chile! Plus, I have yet to catch a cat drinking water from the toilet. Pee in a toilet I’ve heard of,however not drinking from it. An additional bonus, cats don’t bark loud and disrupt the neighbors. They are much more discreet especially in apartment living.
5. Cats (generally) are not so demanding of attention
There are rare exceptions, however generally speaking a cat will approach you when it’s ready to have attention and walk away when it doesn’t want to be bothered. Better yet, a cat can be really clever and find a high hiding spot to be out of the way.
6. Cats are super clever
Don’t believe the hype that cats cannot be trained. Oh yes ma’am they can. I always rave about my youngest cat Dusty and how great she was. No joke. Both she and my first cat knew how to open doors and access food. And an old family friend taught my first cat how to box! But that’s a story for another time.
7. Kittens are cute!
Actually I have got to give dogs credit here too. Both kittens and puppies are adorable. Who can resist smiling when seeing baby kittens and puppies? If the image of that doesn’t warm your heart you must be six feet under.
8. They are affectionate
Despite the stereotypes out there, cats are affectionate. Generally they are just not overly affectionate. I can testify my youngest cat Dusty was definitely affectionate, my first one not as much. However, if I was experiencing drama or hectic time in my life both Precious and Dusty would be right by my side when I wasn’t even expecting them to notice anything. That just goes to show how intuitive cats can be and show compassion and caring.
9. They do well in small space living
Cats do well living in small spaces or large spaces. There is not a lot of space needed to make a cat comfortable. As long as you have a designated area or areas they can escape to they are golden. This includes Kitty condos/trees or window perches. As long as they have a vertical high space to climb and call their own, they are content. Cats are also great for people who live in highly populated cities where space is always an issue.
10. Bath time is taken care of…sort of
Lastly, an extra bonus for cats is they bathe themselves. Thank you! Although this is true, I for one still made it a habit to give my cats a bath every season (at least). Sure cats can bathe themselves however even cats need a good old soap and water scrub down. It’s all a part of having good hygiene.
