So it’s been a little while since I last updated you on my fostering adventures. It’s time for another update!
The shortest fosters in history!
What happened to Riley?
If you follow me on Instagram you know I had introduced you to my polydactyl kitten Riley. What a handsome boy. Riley was an adorable, handsome, gray longhair cat with charm to match. As far a kittens go, I could tell he would be a heart-breaker once he reached adulthood.
So, what happened? Unbeknownst to me, I was allowed to take Riley home while he was undergoing worm treatment. I found out only after I took him home. Within 48 hours he was back at the animal clinic to finish his treatment.

Good news!
However, the good news is that Riley didn’t stay at the clinic for long because he got adopted! One of the staff members fell in love with him, adopted him and took him home. Now Riley is part of one big happy family of four bipeds and plenty of four-legged siblings. From what I hear, he’s fitting right in and doing well.

What about Obsidian?
The second kitten I had the pleasure of fostering was named Obsidian. You may remember seeing him on my Instagram feed. As you may be able to tell from the name, he was an all black kitten and only a few months old. Again, he was such a sweetie pie.
Truth be told I never had a black cat before. Did you know black cats (and dogs) are some of the last to be adopted from shelters due to superstition? It’s true and such a shame because he had such a nice temperament and personality.
So what happened?
Well, similarly to Riley, Obsidian left us in less than a week as a different team of fosterers specializing in kitten adoption, wanted to take him. So Obsidian is on the road to finding his forever home with a bunch of other kittens. Good luck little guy!
Kitten season approaching
After a few weeks without paws, I was itching to have paws back in the house again. I know when it comes to fostering, it’s based on need and with winter coming to an end, I know kitten season is upon us.
Meet Nubs!
This brings me to my latest news. Meet Nubs! I received a random call last Saturday night as a new fosterer was need for a special kitten. “Are you available?” the team leader asked. Of course I replied,“Heck yes I am! Sign me up!”
Nubs is quite the special cat. She is an 8 month old female kitten born with 3 ½ legs. She’s been spayed and is quite lovable. Aside from her missing leg, she also has a mild case of conjunctivitis. So she sneezes on occasion and has issues with red, itchy eyes.
This is my first time dealing with such an issue but I welcome the challenge. Providing a home environment that is cleaner and calmer than a shelter will do Nubs some good.
So just last week, I picked up Nubs and welcomed her into our home. She did well on the car ride home and is quite the chatty Cathy. Learning my lessons from my previous fosters, I was sure to keep her in her crate the first several nights. Actually, I still continue to do so for her own safety.
Nubs is friendly, affectionate and playful. She’s a kitten after all. She’s quite petite for her age but has a big heart. Despite having only three legs she runs around the house like Usain Bolt dashing here and there.
She’s been doing great since being with us a little over a week. I think being home has done wonders for her, as she hasn’t had any flare ups with itchy, red eyes except once so far. I have her eye drops to help with that just in case.
Lessons kittens show us
I’ve shared in the past lessons I’ve learned from my beginning fostering adventures and I continue to learn along the way. What I can also add is that seeing Nubs in action reminds me how animals persevere despite their obstacles.
Nubs doesn’t let her missing leg put a damper on her attitude or her ability to have fun and play rough. She’s loving life, especially being out of the shelter and in a new home.
She’s brought plenty of smiles and laughs in our home. It’s so rewarding and refreshing. Having paws in the house always makes me feel better. Pets really make a house feel more like home, don’t you agree?
*Last minute update on Nubs! – After writing this post I was contacted by the lead foster manager and Nubs is on her way to Northeast Animal Shelter in Massachusetts. I haven’t been there myself however from what I hear from the volunteers, it’s a wonderful no-kill facility with plenty of space for Nubs and an adoption program.
