    Monday Inspiration #81 – A balanced life reflects self-love.

Our lives are so busy and complicated. Before we all were living through a pandemic, most of us had the challenge of juggling our personal lives with our work lives. It’s a delicate balance. Some of us are more successful at dedicating adequate time to that which is a priority. For example, prioritizing family time or exercise is easy for some, but not most people I know, myself included.

    Sacrifice

As a wife, sister, and daughter I learned early on what it meant to sacrifice myself for the benefit of family and friends’ needs. As you grow older you learn that prioritizing others above self can have negative implications. From burnout and resentment to health problems, not practicing self-care is an act of not practicing self-love.

    Prioritize self-love

Today’s inspirational quote made me reflect on these things.  To find healing, peace, happiness, and balance in life it’s important we practice actions of self-love. What does that mean? That means putting yourself first. We are often conditioned to believe habitually sacrificing yourself repeatedly is a noble act of love. To some extent, this is true however, it’s not healthy. At what point does habitual self-sacrifice become harmful?

In the words of Iyanla, if you cannot fill your own cup, you cannot provide anything to anyone else. Fill up your own cup until it runneth over so you have that much more to give to others.

    Conclusion

In closing, it’s important to practice self-care. What does that look like? This will vary person to person.

In my opinion, I think we must make time for ourselves. Whether that means 20 minutes a day for meditation and yoga or taking a drive alone. It could also mean taking a nice long bubble bath in peace or preparing healthy meals for the week ahead. Anything that you can do to positively impact your mental and physical well being is vital to helping you find balance and tackle the obstacles life brings us.

Living in a pandemic has taught me many lessons. One of the best lessons I’ve learned is to get back to basics. I’ve also learned to re-connect with loved ones and friends more often. Live with gratitude. Listen more than you speak. Learn from others’ mistakes. Let history be your guide.

Most of all if what you’ve tried in the past continues to not work, try a brand new strategy.

Lastly, when dealing with all of life’s obstacles do not forget about yourself. Take care of yourself. You only get one life.
