Everyone loves cats. Even if you say you don’t, deep down, you know you can’t resist a pair of fluffy paws and that infamous sparkly-eyed kitty stare. Cat people enjoy the company of their furry friends for many different reasons, but there are a few distinct ones shared by many individual cat breeds.

TICA (The International Cat Association) has so far recognized as many as 71 different domestic breeds of cats. In our cat breed infographic below, we look into 50 of the most popular breeds among their owners, and each breed’s characteristics and traits.

Different owners prefer cats with whom they share some personality traits. Some people enjoy playing with their kitties first thing they get back home, and thus they opt for a more playful breed. Busy people usually prefer independent, low-maintenance cats who enjoy attention but don’t mind being left alone. Finally, people who have larger families and smaller kids enjoy having a calm, loyal friend in their cat.

Overall, cats are pretty lively and playful. A lot of them have a kitten-like personality for many years into their adulthood. The Burmese breed and The Havana Browns are known for being especially fun to play with, especially if you have kids who enjoy animals. Some others, such as Japanese Bobtails, have a dog-like personality, as they will follow you around the house and look forward to even playing fetch.

There are many independent, borderline self-centered cat breeds. These will make sure to be there for cuddles and your overall attention, but don’t mind being alone most of the time. Such breeds are the American Shorthair, perfect for large households, farms, etc. They will enjoy hunting mice and snooping around the house as much as playing with you.

Others, like the Chausie or the Burmilla, enjoy being mischievous and playful. Also, they don’t mind being alone or around other pets. Still, they are always there for you and like sleeping on your lap.

Last, but not least, most people want a loyal kitty companion who will listen to them and be there for cuddles all the time. Among the most popular breeds with this trait are the Toygers and the Siberians. They don’t enjoy being alone and will most likely follow you around at all times. Ragdolls are also America’s Sweethearts, as they are very popular with large families due to their loyalty and cuteness. The fact is, whatever breed you choose you will have a blast and they will teach you a lot more than you will teach them.

Depending on which traits you seek, our infographic can help you choose the best cat for yourself and your family. Let’s dive into it.
