The True Cost of Pet Ownership [Infographic]

    Easy Peasy…

So you’re ready to get a new pet. This will be a piece of cake! All I need is food, water, toys and maybe some cute bow ties for my cat or dog. Cool!

Wait!! Hold up!! Pet ownership is not that simple. Think of it like parenthood. There is much more involved in raising a pet than providing only food, water and a few toys. Have you thought about all the other expenses involved?

    The Reality…

The true cost of pet ownership involves a full lifelong commitment. If you are not prepared to consider living environment, vacation arrangements for care, work, medical visits, insurance, and an emergency fund for your pet you may want to reconsider.

As a volunteer, I can attest that many new pet parents grossly underestimate the cost and commitment it takes to care for a pet. But you don’t have to take my word for it. There are studies and research that support the fact that the true cost of pet ownership is more than you think. Did you know that  78% of people underestimate how much owning a dog or cat costs in the first year?

Now, think about this interesting fact for a second. Did you also know that the cost of owning a cat or dog in the first year can cost you well over $1000? See! These are costs you may not even think about as a first-time pet owner! It’s shocking isn’t it?
