Do You Let Your Pet Sleep With You?

Courtesy guest post and infographic by Jennifer Chonillo – Sleepare.com

Some people are adamant in their preference to allow their pet to sleep with them. While others will tell you emphatically that you should never allow your dog to sleep with you in the same bed. But what does the research say about letting your furry friend sleep in the same bed as you?

If you are a dog owner we can help you decide if your dog should sleep with you at night. In fact, there are 5 good reasons why you should let your dog sleep in the same bed as you. One major reason is that sleeping with your dog can help you to be safer and more secure in your home.

Research suggests that homes with pets are less likely to be the victim of property crimes like burglary. But this isn’t just a modern reasoning for letting your dog sleep with you. Humans have slept with their dogs (or dingos in this case) for centuries if not millennia for protection. Dogs tend to get protective of their human family members and will make sure that no harm comes to them anytime, day or night.

However, protection isn’t the only reason to sleep with your pet at night. Other reasons you should allow your dog to sleep in the same bed with you are:

  • Improved quality of life for both humans and animals
  • Improved sleep quality and duration for humans
  • Improved human health
  • Better bonding between yourself and your furry friend

There are some situations where you should not allow your dog to sleep in the same bed as you. You can see those reasons as well as the reasons when you should allow your pet to sleep with you in this Infographic by SleePare.

The benefits of sleeping with your furry friends include cats too! I can attest to that. Who doesn’t love cuddle time, purrs, and making biscuits? Some of my favorite memories with my fur angels included quality time together this way.

My dogs have always slept in my bed. We snuggle and have “cozy time” but they always end up moving to the end of the bed which allows me to still sleep comfortably lol.

It is up to our dogs where they want to sleep. Our oldest doesn’t like getting up on our bed anymore so sometimes we sleep in the guest room (low futon) or even the floor so he can still have the option.

Great post! I did learn, or become more aware of, the fact that certain illnesses could be spread from dogs to humans like parasitic worms – Ugh! Although I keep my dogs well protected from those nasties. Another good reason to sleep w/ your pet is that you can keep each other warm through the night with your collective body heat. Good for those super cold Winter nights.

Layla starts on the bed at night as it is her bed also LOL and then she goes to her bed and at about 5 in the morning she moans and wakes me up to get under the covers with me. Guess who decides in this house.

We’ve always slept with the pups in bed. There’s nothing like snuggling up together – one big family – while we read books and drift off to sleep together. Plus, I just love it when our dogs lick our faces and wiggle about in the morning to greet us jello!

      Rebecca,

Aww morning kisses are the best. I remember those days. In my case it was morning purrs and biscuits. Thanks for sharing your POV. 🙂

Sophie prefers to stay downstairs so she can stay on the lookout for squirrels and opossums. But Theo and Nelly love to snuggle on the bed with me.

Well, I would let my dog sleep with me if she was interested in that. But since she got her cooling beds, that’s where she likes to be. She gets with us on the couch sometimes but seems to prefer her beds most of all. If she wanted to get in bed with me, she’d be welcome to do so.

Sounds like the cooling beds are exactly what she likes and needs. She’s too hot for bedtime snuggles. It’s A okay. I must admit during the humid summer months, my cat Dusty would get up and hop off the bed and hang out in the tub because she’d be too hot…long hair and all. I wish I knew about cooling beds in those days.

I am a firm believer that allowing our dogs to sleep in bed with us has had a positive impact on my sleep quality. I have always been that person, struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep. However, when I’m cuddling the pups, I doze off far quicker.
