I tried Winnie’s Picks paint by numbers, and this happened.

You all know I love to create and make art. This time I was curious to try something new and different- paint by numbers. If you have been following my blog since the beginning, you know I previously talked about my experience with the healing power of art and how it helped me in the grief process after Dusty died. I’m no Picasso by any means, but I love colorful abstract art. It makes me feel happy, and I get to use my creative outlet by making art that resonates with my passions. Speaking of which, sometime last year, I was scrolling the world wide web from my cell phone, and in my sidebar feed, I saw Winnie’s Picks paint by numbers for adults. What? They have paint by numbers for adults too. I’m curious. I tried Winnie’s Picks paint by numbers, and this is what happened.

After taking a quick glimpse of the advertisement and browsing their selection of designs, I decided to purchase the colorful modern abstract cat design. The retail price is $29.95; however, I happened to get my kit on sale for less with a discount code.

Now keep in mind the website features a variety of different themed art you can create, from vintage landscapes to animals and florals. They also can do custom work.

So how does it work? When you order your kit online in the mail, you’ll receive your kit.

As noted on their website, you’ll receive the following.

Is paint by numbers for me?

I personally love trying new things. I love cats, and I love painting. So why not. But for those who have never considered this before, I’d recommend it. It’s a great kit for beginners.

Additionally, paint by numbers is relaxing. It’s easy to follow and can go at your own pace. It’s a great gift idea for a loved one or even for yourself. The kit includes everything you need, so there is no stress about finding the right paint colors or brushes.

Quality service

I had a great experience using their website with no issues. However, the company does make note of how they value providing great service to their customers in the following manner.

My Experience

So, I’m sure you are wondering how my experience was with using this paint-by-numbers kit. I will say it was a process…. a good one! Let me break it down.

Arrival

As the website noted, true to form, I received my paint-by-numbers kit in the mail promptly. My shipment came securely wrapped in a cardboard tube. Upon opening the container, I saw everything was included as described.

I received 4 paintbrushes, pre-numbered and sorted acrylic paints, mounting brackets, and nails, instructions, a large linen canvas to paint, and a small-scale duplicate on paper. Lastly, the company included an index-sized color print as a guide or reference to use while painting.

The only thing not included in the kit was a jar or container to use to rinse off your paintbrushes while changing colors and paper towels for cleanup.

Getting started

I started my project by laying my linen canvas on the flat surface of my desk. I left room on the sides to make my paints and water jar accessible.

What I love about paint by numbers is it’s easy to follow. The instructions did recommend painting from top to bottom or left to right as to avoid getting paint on your forearms or smudging up your work. That makes sense to me. All sections of the design are numbers and outlined clearly. If I had only one critique, it would be to make the font size of the numbers larger. Or maybe I’m just getting old?

I prefer organization and strategy, so I decided to choose a number and stick with that one number throughout the painting and work left to right while working. Sometimes it was helpful to just rotate the linen canvas 90 degrees while working too.

Once I was finished with one color, I rinsed with brushes and moved on to the next number. That was my strategy throughout this paint project. I also used the larger brush when painting large sections of the design and the very fine point brushes when painting narrow or small sections.

Progress

I started this project in the first week of July and finished in about 3 weeks. I fit in time on the weekends, a few hours each time to do my painting.

While painting and re-touching up some areas, I noticed my paints started to dry out; however, by adding a few drops of water and stirring with the wooden end of my paintbrush, I could easily get the smooth liquid consistency I needed to finish my painting.

It was fun watching my colorful modern abstract cat come alive slowly. By the last week of the month, I was finished. The beauty of a paint-by-numbers project is that you can go as fast or slow as you like.
