Over the past several weeks I’ve expressed the importance of practicing self-care as a part of the healing journey while grieving and navigating daily life. The other important part of finding joy after loss includes giving back. Hence, I’m sharing this Maya Angelou quote today.

“As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.”— Maya Angelou

I wrote a post a while back called 5 reasons why I think fostering a pet is a good idea. I talked about my experience volunteering after the loss of my cat Dusty helped heal my heart and form new relationships. Additionally, I discovered the world of fostering cats as well.

Through my pain, I made the decision to use my hands, passion for animals, and administrative talents to help my community.  By choosing to dedicate my time and talents to help a local non-profit organization, I found newfound joy. It is in that happiness of seeing those precious little furry faces and wagging tails, that made me feel inspired and find healing day after day.

The Importance of Helping Others Lessons

Fostering taught me about the gratitude and love animals have for being rescued and loved. They learn what it is to be free from a hoarder’s space. Animals taught me about growing in patience and understanding. Fostering cats not only fed my passion for helping others but most of all reminded me that hearts heal and life goes on.

The memories shared with my cats Dusty and Precious will always remain. And it’s my duty to continue a legacy of sharing love with others. Opening my home to animals in need is an honor. They teach me so much about unconditional love and understanding. And they help me grow to be a better person.

Final Thoughts

So I encourage you to use your pain and your talents to create change for the better in someone else’s life. You never know how lending a small helping hand can have such a great impact on the world, including yourself.

    My wife and I recently lost our cat to cancer and we recently started fostering. I didn’t realize how much having cats in the house again, would help us find our joy again. Despite some “accidents” it’s been a great experience for both me and my wife and helping get kittens adopted. This quote holds true.

      I’m sorry to hear about your cat’s passing. I’m happy for you both that you were able to find a way to help the community despite everything and find your happy again. I can relate to those “accidents” too! It’s frustrating but all that goes away when you get the news they have found a forever home. Thanks for sharing your insight!
